A unique piece of railroad history…
The Alaska Boxcar Number 10264, originally built by Pullman-Standard in 1943, has a rich history and has been repurposed as a retail store for RailCycle Mt. Rainier, part of Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, a nonprofit organization committed to railroad preservation. This Boxcar served a significant role during World War II as a troop sleeper or hospital car. It was part of a production run of 2,400 cars built under a war emergency contract.
During its time as a troop sleeper, the car accommodated 29 servicemen along with a porter. The bunks were stacked three high, and the car featured Pullman beds set across the interior. The top bunks remained fixed, while the bottom two could be converted into seats during the day. Basic amenities included two sinks with hot and cold water and two enclosed toilets. Notably, in that era, the toilets and sinks were designed to directly dump waste onto the tracks.
After serving in government service until 1947, the car was sold as surplus to the railroads. The Alaska Railroad acquired a significant number of these cars and modified them for their needs. The modifications involved closing the ends, removing the seats, sinks, and toilets, and replacing them with standard boxcar side doors. The windows were plated over, transforming the troop sleeper into a functional box car. These modified cars remained in use by the Alaska Railroad until the 1980s.
In its current state as a retail store for RailCycle operations, the interior of the box car has been left largely untouched, maintaining the historical integrity of the car. The graffiti on the walls dates back to the 1940s and 1950s, which tells stories of the past, and has been preserved, allowing visitors to experience a glimpse of the car's vibrant history.
RailCycle Mt. Rainier is a fundraiser for Western Forest Industries Museum, the operator of Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. Our mission is to cultivate an understanding of the history and culture of the Railroad and logging operations while promoting environmentally respectful tourism and economic opportunity.
