Our 2025 Annual Report reflects a year of resilience, progress, and transition. After rebuilding core operations in prior years, Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad faced significant challenges in 2025, including infrastructure sabotage, ongoing security concerns, and severe weather events. Despite these pressures, we safely sustained operations, completed major projects and exceeded prior-year ticket sales. Structurally, we achieved a major milestone by securing ownership of the railroad corridor and entering 2026 with common carrier status, unlocking new opportunities for state and federal investment. As we look ahead, our focus shifts from recovery to refinement—completing deferred work, strengthening internal systems, and supporting the people who make this railroad possible. This year marked not an ending, but a clear foundation for responsible stewardship and long-term sustainability.

A lot can change in six-months. Our little nonprofit has owned Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad for almost 22 months now and what a wild ride it's been. We're committed to being transparent about how we conduct business, make decisions, and what our successes and challenges are, so here's a business update for you, a Mid-Year Report.

Between January and June this year, we've carried 21,126 passengers, generated over $900k in income, and done a heck of a lot of work to our equipment and right of way. This success isn't without challenges, however, as we struggle to meet capacity/demand, execute capital projects with our small staff, and train, schedule and coordinate volunteer efforts. We're chugging along and think we can, think we can, think we can, keep climbing the mountain as the little railroad that could.

In our capacity as a recently revived nonprofit, we have achieved significant milestones over the past year, albeit not without encountering challenges. Embarking on the formidable task of reopening a railroad without substantial corporate or philanthropic backing, we remain committed to forging a sustainable business model and upholding transparency in our communication. We hope that our efforts will help other organizations like ours and spark an ongoing dialogue about what it takes to keep a place like Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad alive.
